Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane
If you’re a Florida native, you’re no rookie to hurricane season. September is National Preparedness Month and that means it’s time to take out that checklist and make sure your home and family is prepared in the event of a storm hitting the Space Coast. As your Viera home insurance professionals, we want to make sure to give you all the tools and tips of the trade to stay safe this hurricane season. Here are some things to keep in mind when getting ready for a hurricane :
- Make sure to know your local hurricane evacuation routes and where you could evacuate to in the event of a storm.
- Have a supply kit handy with batteries, a flashlight, cash, a first aid kit, food, water, chargers, and copies of your important personal information.
- If a storm hits and you’re not ordered to evacuate, make sure you’re stocked on supplies in case the power goes out and you’re unable to leave your home.
- Try to trim and remove damaged trees and landscaping that could damage your home in hurricane-force winds.
- Secure rain gutters and drainage systems to help prevent water damage to your property.
- Make sure your roof and all doors and windows are secure and reinforced.
- Consider having a backup generator for use in power outages
- Make sure to have a family emergency plan to minimize miscommunication and potential safety hazards during a hurricane.
It’s also a good idea to consider flood insurance for your home. When a disaster strikes, flood insurance policyholder claims are paid and you’ll be reimbursed for all of your covered losses. To be ready for whatever hurricane season throws your way this year, consider adding flood insurance to your home or business insurance policy. Stay safe, Brevard!
